HELLO & WELCOME

What is work based training?

Work-based training is a learning programme you complete while employed and working at your employer’s premises. There’s no need to attend college, as we visit you regularly to deliver your training and guide you through your qualification. Occasionally, you may be required to visit one of our offices, but this will be clearly outlined from the start.

What subjects can I study at VTS?

We have courses available from levels 2 – 5 in Childcare, Adult Social Care, Healthcare, Teaching Assistant in Schools, and Management in different settings. Please take a look at our courses pages for more information.

What types of courses are available?

Our most popular programmes are apprenticeships, but we also offer stand-alone qualifications if an apprenticeship isn’t the right fit for you.

APPRENTICESHIPS

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship combines paid employment with a structured learning and skills development programme, lasting between one and two years. It is tailored to your job role and learning style. You’ll gain practical, on-the-job experience while also spending dedicated ‘off-the-job’ time studying for industry-recognised qualifications, including maths and English if it is applicable to you.

Who can be an apprentice?

Anyone can apply—there’s no age limit! As long as you are employed for at least 16 hours per week and meet certain criteria, you can enrol.

How much will it cost me?

Absolutely nothing! The cost is entirely covered by government funding plus in some cases, a contribution from your employer. Please take a look at our funding pages for more information.

Why should I choose an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship qualification is highly valued by employers. It will equip you with the skills and knowledge to perform your job more effectively and open doors to career progression.

Who will be involved in my apprenticeship?

VTS will work closely with your employer and together, we will ensure that you have all the training and support you need to achieve your apprenticeship. We will visit you regularly at your workplace to set you work and discuss your progress. Your employer will be there to support you in between our visits.

Will I get paid?

Yes! Apprenticeships are paid jobs, and your employer must pay you at least the National Minimum Wage.

Will I have to work hard?

Yes—apprenticeships are a commitment that requires dedication. However, your hard work will pay off, leaving you with a recognised qualification and a strong sense of achievement.

How do I enrol on an apprenticeship?

If you are already employed and you would like to know if apprenticeship training is available to you, please get in touch with us to enquire or speak to your employer. If you are not yet employed and are looking for an apprenticeship, we may be able to match you with a suitable employer. Please take a look at current vacancies here, or on our vacancies page.

STAND ALONE QUALIFICATIONS

Apprenticeships aren’t suitable for everyone, but you can still gain a work-based qualification relevant to your job. These programmes focus solely on your qualification—no maths or English required. These are usually diplomas or certificates at Levels 2–5 (previously known as NVQs).

Please note, stand-alone qualifications are not government-funded. They can be privately funded or, in some cases, covered by a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan. For more details, see our funding pages.
